Hey!
I know this is looking waaaay way into the future, but I've been thinking- if we do make a profit from our journal, it might be nice to donate it to a charity? Time as a theme makes me think of the time we have in the world, and how short or long life can be. For this reason, I would suggest that we donate the money to cancer research, or a hospice. This is purely because these are charities I feel a connection to, but of course if we did decide to do this we could have a chat about what charities we want to donate to etc.
I know we might not make much of a profit, but I was thinking we may even have money left over and it might be nice to see it go to a good cause.
The reason I raise this point at such an early stage is that if we do decide to do this, we could advertise that all profits go to a chosen charity while advertising the journal.
Just an idea, I know it probably won't be much money (at all) but I think it would be a nice gesture.

Hey, I like that idea too (and my mum happens to work at a hospice).

That's a really nice idea Not sure what the structure of class will be like tomorrow but if we get chat time amongst ourselves you should bring this up. Chances are we won't make a lot anyway and splitting that between so many people will be a nightmare xD Another charity option would be like an Alzheimers one...they don't get much media attention or funding and time - they lose memory and with it a sense of time. Just another suggestion Any charity would be an excellent idea ^^

I think donating any profits to charity would be a wonderful thing to do.

Yay! I'm glad you all like this idea as I thought everyone would say no since we won't make much. Ill bring it up today if we get a chance Yeah kerryann that's another good one, relates to the theme and you're right they don't get much support.

I agree with all of this How would this work if we get money from the alumni fund? I believe they'll want their loan back. But who knows this may make our little venture more appealing to them. How would this also effect next year if we hand down the baton to third year?

Do you mean in terms of us giving money to them? I don't think we need to, after all we haven't had that done for us.
As for the Alumni, I'm not sure, but we can only ask

No I mean 3rd years might not fancy the idea of taking it over quite so much if we've already decided that all the profits are going to charity - they might want to do something else with it. And setting it up the way we are if we are going to pass on 'Flux' we should pass on the profits so it is easier for them next year, this is not about the class but about the 'club' we've set up at the union.

There was a strong suggestion from a member of staff that they are considering scrapping the journal next year - so not sure if we should bear any potential third years in mind, or stick to what we'd prefer to do in the overall scheme of things.

Yeah I was under that impression too, Kathleen. I'll suggest this on Thursday anyway as I think it would be a nice thing to do

Yeah, Beatrice said they don't like the structure of the class (because there's more of an emphasis on raising money, getting published etc opposed to actually creating work) so next year it will have a similar theme but it won't be the same class at all. She said it's very much in planning stages but the class will be scrapped and they'll have a similar theme (like it will be very like the portfolio class.) So I don't think we have to worry about that really.

I thought though that if we're applying to the alumni fund we we're going to suggest passing on the baton at least in terms of the student union club - no idea how the application for the alumni fund is going because claire and dave seem to have taken that on.
I'm just playing devils advocate in order to point out any potential problems that this may bring - I really do love the idea though.

Great idea. Makes me feel less bitter about putting my own money in too. As for the alumni, if we get funding we can use what we need and leave the rest for the third years but money from sales goes to charity? I'd vote cancer as well... or straight to the Beatson? Although I don't know if that's possible.
(Michelle, somehow I've forgotten how to start a new thread but I wanted to start one for job delegation. Could you do it? Just pop up the things on your 'to do list' and hopefully the sub-editors will help you out so you can meet your other deadlines? I don't know why I can't find it... silly brain!)

It'd be nice if we could give it to the Beatson because my Mum is still going there twice a week, haha. Good to give something back. And yeah, Bea definitely is scrapping the class. She told me last week that she's changing it to a New Narratives class (I think that's what she called it) and that it'll be about students coming up with stories as usual, but presenting them in a different way. So they'll get to go away and make podcasts, blogs, videos, animation, stuff like that. Sounded very cool and she seems dead enthusiastic about it!

I would be so up for giving whatever money we have left to Cancer Research/ the Beatson hospital. My dad was treated there when he was diagnosed with lymphoma a couple of years ago and it would really mean a lot to me personally to give something back to them. Gah! Who knew that a forum post could get you all emotional .
