Hello literary journal-ers, Just starting up a design thread (as I’d said I would following on from Thursday’s discussion). I think the design team’s first ‘objective’ or project is to create an image/logo that can be used to identify us for things like adverts, facebook/twitter profile pictures etc. I think a bit of research is important first though rather than rushing into creating a logo that we’ll be bound to. So... the plan for the next week is to pull together research on what kind of designs we like (particularly in terms of logo, fonts/typography, and the front cover of the journal). If anyone has any ideas/links then feel free to post them on here. Most of the definitions I’ve found of ‘flux’ speak of a flowing or a continuous stream/motion, and it is often a word used to talk about the motion of water. Kathy and I discussed on Thursday that we’re quite interested in a design that captures this idea of ‘movement’, rather than going for a clock-based design (although we’re still open to suggestion). I like the idea of a design that is flowing/fluid... maybe light trails or something like that. Anyway! Will post up a few of the links I’ve found underneath here. Feel free to pitch in as this is just a brainstorming thread! p.s. I love the layout/design of this journal: www.popshotpopshot.com/magazine.html Think it’s a bit over our budget to produce something like this, but might be good borrow to take some ideas from them.

Typography/fontsI still need to have a look for fonts that would be good for the bulk of the text in the journal. But here are a couple of fonts that I quite liked that could potentially be good for headers: This website (http://www.creativebloq.com/graphic-design-tips/best-free-fonts-for-designers-1233380) has a number of links to free fonts, quite a few nice ones. In particular I quite liked: practicefoundry.com/fabrica.html - this one for its simplicity. Possibly a bit too simple though. www.losttype.com/font/?name=carton – this one for its boldness/the fact it looks quite rusted. Don’t know if this really suits the ‘flowing’ idea though. But the pictures show that it works quite well for posters. www.behance.net/gallery/Valentina-typeface-free-font/3527197 - I really like this one, for its loopy-ness. Could be quite nice for the titles to add a bit of interest. (Few more examples of it here: pedroarilla.com/en/valentina) - - - - - I also like this lady’s work - www.mollyjacquesillustration.com/p/calligraphy.html - it’s maybe a bit loopy for us, but I like how she makes the words look like they are flowing across the page. If you look a bit more at her website, she mixes loopy writing with bolder, more simple writing which is also looks really good. And this website also has some nice font/type ideas: www.sashaprood.com/index.html - - - - - - All just ideas. Or places to get ideas really! Will post up some illustration related things after I've had some soup, then will stop bombarding you with links (for now).

Illustration/artwork ideas:I quite like the idea of having an original artwork on the cover and possibly a few small drawings woven into the actual journal – although this might up being quite expensive, so we’d need to be careful about who we asked. I’ve been looking at a few Glasgow/Scotland based artists on Flickr just for inspiration ideas, and one artist that I quite liked is Laura Frame - www.flickr.com/photos/laurasillustration/ - she’s at the Glasgow School of Art, I think. I especially like this drawing: www.flickr.com/photos/laurasillustration/7329343132/in/set-72157626000519646 - like the fluidity of the lines in this, could be cool to have a pattern along these lines (although obviously not a jellyfish). Coincidently, I was doodling a couple of days ago before I saw this picture... and came up with a (very rough) sketch of something quite is quite similar to this flowing drawing - http://instagram.com/p/VjaAHZOw6x - something (neater) along these lines might be quite good? I also had a look at Neil Slorance who Claire had mentioned and also really like his drawings. Especially this one: www.flickr.com/photos/osm_art/5031576152/in/photostream Also Lisa Claire Stewart - lisaclairestewart.co.uk/ - has some good design ideas if you go to the ‘books and typography’ link on her website. I quite like the simple design of the ‘plastic ocean’ book. - - - - - I was also wondering whether it might be good to have the word ‘flux’ in the centre, as an illustration. For example, this is something I drew years ago, and this kind of idea could maybe work: http://instagram.com/p/VjZ_1puw6w Another example that I found online of this kind of thing is here: junoondesigns.com/projects/believeinyourself/ One thing that could work is to have the word ‘flux’ as the main feature, and a flowing design coming out of the ‘x’ ...maybe? Anyway! All just ideas. Just letting you know what research I’ve been doing so far! I'll try and bring in an assortment of the things I've found on Thursday as I know not everyone has time to troll through all of these links!

I know I'm not design but just wanted to have a nosy! Wow, that jellyfish is really pretty. Love the colours on that.
The believe in yourself picture is really cool. It looks kind of tattoo-ish.

Another good website for design ideas: bookcoverarchive.com/Most of the covers I'm liking at the moment are quite simple, lots of white space. Think this is something we want to go for probably. Will try and bring along a few I particularly like tomorrow and we can start working towards creating a logo!

More links (sorry) Some nice, more handwriting-type fonts on here: thriftandthistle.co.uk/ (they cost about £5 though, but you can test them out before you buy them). Really like the 'melanchonic' font. Also... this is quite a cool idea: ink designs (http://thriftandthistle.co.uk/resources/ink#prettyPhoto). Could also tie in with 'flux' and writing. Will stop linking now though.

After today's discussion, the plan is that the design team are going to make a number of possible logos, discuss them over the weekend, and then bring our best options on Monday and people can have a say which one they like the best. As I said earlier, feel free to pitch in with any ideas if you'd like to have an input in this and we'll keep them in mind A few good logo sites I've found for inspiration (posting them up here to show you, and also partly so I can find them again!) getbraizen.com/portfolio/various-logos/getbraizen.com/portfolio/various-logos-2/pinterest.com/thinkmule/logos/

Hey guys, i was really impressed with the logo designs that were presented in the class today ! I really hope that i'm not treading on anybody's toes by suggesting this, but i thought i would put this question out to the design team anyway: purely because Melissa mentioned that she was keen on capturing the idea of "movement" and "motion" within the design, i thought it would maybe be a cool idea to create a "moving" logo for the website, i.e. a gif image. In the past i've created a few logos for my brother's/friends' bands that they have used on their MySpaces pages, or made my own username logos for my old livejournal page etc., and so i thought i could perhaps create one for the Flux website (obviously once you guys have agreed upon the font, colours etc.). I have attached an example of one of these "logos" just so you can see what i mean. If anybody has any problems with this, or if you're just not interested, then that is totally fine haha . I just thought i would put it to you for your consideration x Attachments:

Hi guys, Just to let you know I'm not able to make today's class. Dean and I have made a plan to talk later on tonight about the posters so hopefully I'll not miss too much. Should hopefully have them ready by tomorrow. I've also sent Kathleen a draft logo for the Facebook/twitter page so hopefully they can be up and running soon now.

Ps Jenna; just realised I didn't reply to you. I quite like the idea of doing something like that. I've been taking pictures of interesting 'f's I've seen about the town and was thinking we could maybe put them on a loop on the website somewhere. Will speak to the rest of the team and get back to you xx

I'm not so sure about the logo in the example though - because of the delicate, wispy look of the design it should be a slow/unfurling logo, if anything. It might be nice to loop some 'F's as Melissa has suggested later on, but I think the main thing just now will be for us to get the website up and running, looking nice, and with all required content! And a donations page of course

No i agree - i wasn't suggesting that the example i provided should resemble the logo that the design team come up with in any shape or form; i was purely just showing one that i had made in the past

Hey, Craig Lamont, designer over at Cargo Publishing got in touch today to ask how things were going and also to say that he designed the covers for Valve and Maement (hint hint). He then asked if we have a designer Just thought I'd let folk know, though I know Dean and Melissa are doing the design.
