Hi everyone, quick note to ask if everyone will be able to bring along twenty pounds sterling tomorrow? We need to get this money together as soon as possible to get printing up and running for stickers and posters to advertise our events. Also possibly muffins.
I understand twenty pounds could be difficult for some to muster, given it is near the end of the month. If you aren't able to contribute tomorrow, I'll be printing up a list to keep check of who has and hasn't put in.

I was wondering if we really need to put in £20. Wouldn't £10 each get us a fair chunk of money and if we need more we can add it?
And for the "start up cost" are we going to get copies of the journal in return?

Thought since we've been talking about putting money in for a while, it would be easier to have a one off payment. It would give us a good bit of money in case of any unforeseen costs in the short-term.
There should be no problem in getting a copy each. Even if we print 250 copies, as ambitious as we might be, there will be more than a few spare.
Myself and Claire have emailed David to ask for some items to be added to the agenda tomorrow. We can discuss it all in greater detail then.

Maybe people who can afford £20 could put that in, and those who feel they can't can just put in £10? Could add in an extra £10 later if they want. Maybe a good compromise.
*small digression*
All this talk of muffins makes me think of The Importance of Being Earnest...
'How you can sit there calmly eating muffins when we are in this horrible trouble I can't make out. You seem to me to be perfectly heartless.'
'Well I can't eat muffins in an agitated manner. The butter would probably get on my cuffs. One should always eat muffins quite calmly. It's the only way to eat them.'
*digression ends*

I already had this on the agenda as we really need to sort out the start up funds as soon as possible, so we can discuss it tomorrow!
I doubt everyone will bring in money tomorrow as not everyone checks the forum regularly.....
And love the digression, Melissa.

Yeah think that was too late and too short notice to ask people to bring in money. Not everyone checks it and not everyone will have the money on this short notice.
More importantly, where is the money going to go? I thought the plan was to get the bank account set up then we all send our money through PayPal to the journal PayPal account?

I have only just been able to check the forum this afternoon as i have been staying at my dad's the past couple of days (where i have had no internet access), and so i won't be able to hand in any money today. But yeah, as Gemma said, i thought we were all sending our money through PayPal?

I have to agree with Michelle and Melissa about the £20 initial cost. I can personally, and unashamedly, admit that due to family circumstances I'm in a position where I scrape by with my job just now. Even £10 is difficult to off-handedly donate but with the promise of a journal in return, I have no problem putting in £10 just now and then another £10 next month. As I say, I know not everyone will want to confess openly but as small as the amount seems, if we can keep costs to a minimum and then add as we need to, we'll never end up allowing the possibility of overindulging on unnecessary costs occur and will have little wasted money. I'm very much up for the contribute wine and whatnot idea though! I know I have some that can be sacrificed. Aaaaaand that's my ten cents PS. Kudos to Melissa for the Wilde quote. I honestly had that in my mind the past few times muffins came up!

Once we find out if the Union bank account thing (I don't know the technical term!) allows for PayPal or not, we can sort out the start up funds. If it doesn't, we can just open a bank account, it's no bother.

Have we made any further progress in finding out if the Union bank account will allow us access to PayPal?
I'm concerned that we still haven't gathered a base fund from everyone's contributions (which we'll need PayPal for in order to facilitate this), especially since we have the first event coming up soon!

I spoke to claire and dave about this on monday - there is a facility to pay in BACS I think, like how your wages are paid in but no facilities for paypal.
There was talk of testing how easy it is to put money into the account through this method for us paying in.
I did however mention that this might not be appropriate for online purchases of the journal when it's finished so if BACS is more difficult than paypal we'll probably have to open a business account.

To be honest I think we should just open a bank account, will be much easier when it comes to selling online. People are reluctant to buy things online without the option of PayPal. Xx

Yeah, I agree with Gemma. A bank account would be simpler probably and I think we need simple, especially where money and ordering is concerned. We don't want a potential journal-buyer giving up because they don't like the online process. I know I don't really like putting in my card details online unless it's places like Amazon where it feels pretty safe.
