Hey folks, Here's a sketch from Neil. He says he could do a 15/20 image animation with the girl turning the hour glass for an estimated £60! A bargain, I'd say. What do you think? I can't keep him waiting too long as he has other commissions to get on with so any comments would be appreciated. Claire Attachments:

I think it's very cute!
But is it too "cute", if you know what I mean?
Would it fit in with the general design we're going for? Maybe if it was just an hourglass on its own or something instead.

P.S. I realise I look like a dick now because he's gone to the trouble of doing it for us, but it's just a concern.

Kinda agree. I think the hourglass he's drawn without the girl would fit well.

I was thinking the same; just the hourglass on its own would maybe be better. I really like the style of the hourglass - I think it goes really well with our Flux logo!

Well, this is why he's sent us a sample sketch! I said I'd let him know what kind of feedback I received tomorrow. I actually asked for him to put a character in it because... well, if we had just wanted an hour glass... I could've drawn an hour glass, jeez... Dave could even draw an hour glass!
I think having Neil's artwork in it could sell us a few copies but I don't think having him draw an hour glass over and over would be using him to his potential. (I know he's not Monet but his stuff is pretty popular.)
How about like a tortoise walking past?
What if the sand was to get stuck and the girl looks annoyed then gives the hour glass a wee shake and it starts again?
I am taking your comments on board, I promise, I'm just super keen on this flip book idea.

I personally don't think I'd get the tortoise walking past - I think I'd wonder what a tortoise had to do with anything (but that might just be my brain). I agree with David, it is cute but I don't think it really matches up with Melissa's design?
I think we should only go with the positive point of having his artwork sell us more copies if it fits in line with the overall look. Anyway, see what everyone thinks!

Hey guys, just my two pennies. I really like the image. I also agree that even I (I wish I could've use italics there...) could draw an hour glass on its own. However squinty that hour glass might be is down to your own imagination: perhaps Jessica Rabbit after a bad lypo session comes to my mind.
Back to the point. I don't think having the hour glass on its own would work and I do think it fits in with the overall style. I don't mean this in an offensive way - I like Melissa's design - but it is not edgy in and of itself, it's hardly like the cover is a steampunk orgy or anything (whatever one of them would look like...) so I think it will fit well. Neil is a well known artist and having him mention our journal as 'containing the artwork of Neil Slorance' will only help us sell more issues.

have to agree with the overall jist - this is cute but something a bit more edgy would fit a bit better Oddly enough a sculptor springs to mind - he made this www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bny6CoI7DHA - the worlds most expensive bottle opener with this in mind I perhaps think if we're going for the flick book idea what about putting a clock together piece by piece starting with a small spinning cog and building up to a clock face and dials before retreating again to all the individual pieces

I like the picture, his style is really cute -- if general consensus is that the girl is random couldn't he do a design based on the hourglass itself? Like I dunno - how Pixar have that lamp that beats the crap out of the 'i' in Pixar. Have an hourglass that can move? Maybe have it flipping itself over when the time runs out? Something like that.
Just a thought.

Ok, cool. If anyone has any other suggestions then post them up and I'll compile them into a wee brief to send over to Neil.
I like Michelle's idea too but as it is more complex I think it would be more expensive. I like your idea too Kerryann, although I'd worry that it would look a wee bit like the staple that pops up to ask you if you're writing a letter when you're quite obviously writing a letter on Word.

Well say 20-30 little ones building it up and we just 'play' the same ones backwards to dismantle the clock

Also I think £60 quid is pretty damned cheap - I wouldn't mind if it went up to about £150 if the budget could allow it. I think that this is something that could really help the journal stand out so it's worth spending money on it

Yeah, I agree, might as well go for it if we can manage to afford it.
