Hi guys,
As your events/treasurer person thought I'd start a thread for fundraising, events and the like! Ideas can go here for when we get to that. I realise it may not be top priority just yet while we get our journal ideas together, but here you go!
The type of events I have put on in the past that have worked best are: band nights, school disco, dead musician night, open mic and dj battles. Usually this involves politely asking mates in bands/folk who can dj to play for free. I'm on the committee for fusion radio, they're good for organising fun things for people to come to. Another big one was a roller disco, but we had to pay the company organising so that would probably be a step backward!
Anyway, I'm here to organise funds and take ideas. Fundraising can be a good old laugh when organised well! Also I'll need to set up an account for money.

Caitlin, I spoke to Frankie yesterday and he more or less said we can get Broadcast for free (for those who don't know, it's the relatively new bar beside Nice n Sleazys (http://www.facebook.com/broadcastglasgow).
The best sort of event I think would be putting on some gigs...so probably a good time to politely ask friends bands! They have put lots of great shows on so far, and it's quite a cool atmosphere. We would just need to decide whether we want to go with this for one event idea, and then would just need to double check with the promoter (who I know).
Obviously we were talking about around Valentines Day for a potential first event, but that would be too soon if we went for this - over the next couple of months is fine, just need some notice.

As for an event like a ceilidh, there are several community/church halls around Glasgow we could probably use. I know some folk who put on something similar in Glasgow, and ran their own bar that they made a lot of money from. This scenario would only be if anyone knew a license holder, of course!

I'm not sure how 'ethical' this is but we are writers, can we exchange our services as writers for things (i.e. prizes for a raffle etc.)?
For instance we could offer to write positive (and entirely truthful reviews) on websites such as 5pm and tripadvisor etc. as a thank you for donating prizes, I know in this economic climate some business will do just about anything for good reviews.
Would it be possible to offer some space in the Strathclyde Telegraph as well?

Guess the number of sweets in a jar & Guess the birthday of the teddy/metro-gnome - start up for both of these will probably be about £10 or so which could easily com out of the money we're putting in, guesses would cost maybe 25-50p which could give us a profit of up to £150 from each if we manage to get about 300 guesses for each game - hopefully get this by targeting the big lecture theaters, bringing them along to our events etc. If they go well we could get a few of these done by the time we print.
Raffle -BLAG! blag as much free stuff as we can and raffle it.
Coffee morning/pre-launch - I think maement or valve did something like this good for publicity and making a few bob selling cakes and coffee/tea

If someones good with online auctions we could put a bunch of our own stuff that we don't want anymore and put the money to the journal.

Offer space in the telegraph for what, do you mean? Don't think Louise would condone writing reviews 'for' things, if that makes sense. Bit ethically dubious, haha. The other suggestions sound good though!

For some reason I can't get the idea of someone dressing up as a book (or the journal itself) out my head :/
I think it would be hilarious, raise awareness on campus (and around town - facebook/twitter/website on the back) and we could ask for donations for getting your pic taken with the book if it could have a few 'working' pages with a real story on it then all the better too.

Michelle, think this costume with added pages of writing and real stories may be a bit out of our price range....

Ps. I know a guy who is a pretty good musician- he writes his own stuff etc, who would probably do it for free! I'm sure he'd do it if he had a bit f notice about when it was- and he works with me so could probably get a bit of a corwd from wok to go if i had notice

Hello! Good, looks like we're all on the same page! I was thinking if we're going for our first event in three weeks we should do something fairly simple like an acoustic night, the dj thing, or never underestimate an old fashioned bake sale for bringing in some money. Then we can have a big event in March/April with lots of promotion and in a good venue? Like a ceilidh or band night. Personally I think a band night would bring in lots of people, as if we have 4 or 5 bands they'll each sell more tickets?
